Welcome Darren Wang!
Darren Wang is a former atheist who underwent a deep interior conversion to Christ in his search for meaning in life. He first became a Protestant, being very deeply rooted in the Word, before entering the Catholic Church after a few conversations with a priest about the importance of Apostolic and Petrine authorities in governing the structure of the Church and ensuring her orthodoxy in doctrine. He has a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Life Science from Yale-NUS College. Being interested in theological topics since his move into the Catholic Church, he has spent a semester abroad in the University of Notre Dame to study foundational theology and an introduction to Aquinas’ work. Specifically, he is interested in the theological debate between Catholicism and Orthodoxy in matters like ecclesiology, prayer and the process of salvation.
To these ends, he studied parts of the Summa Contra Gentiles, the Summa Theologiae, and the general themes of Scripture during his time in Notre Dame to familiarise himself with the Catholic view of topics like the process of salvation, the procession of the Holy Spirit, and typology. His learning of the differences between Eastern and Western Christianity extends beyond books and into liturgy, since Notre Dame provides opportunities to attend Eastern liturgies along with the Mass. These liturgies include the Maronite Qurbono (offering in Syriac), the Melkite Divine liturgy, and the Ukrainian Divine liturgy. Darren believes that liturgy is as crucial as books in learning about God, since it provides a sensory experience of Him through the taste of the Eucharist, the sound of hymns and bells and the scent of incense. This sensory experience has the potential to penetrate deep into the worshipper’s being by encouraging a time of contemplation.
He is currently a parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea and an active member on probation at a Legion of Mary praesidium in the parish.
